Kristen Young: Director

My name is Kristen Young and I have worked at the Learning Tree since September of 2000. I first worked as the head teacher of the Dinosaur and Monkey rooms until 2015. I was the manager after this until I took ownership in 2022. It has been really rewarding watching kids grow over the years; I adore getting to know each and every student that comes through here. My goal is to create a fun and safe environment for the best learning experience a child can have. I would like to maintain the traditions of the previous owner, Kit Harvey.

I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. I graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor’s in science in both Psychology and Sociology. I moved to Boise shortly after graduation with the intention of only staying for a year or two. Twenty-three years later, I’m still here! I’m married with an 18 year old daughter and two sons, ages 15 and 13. I enjoy traveling, reading, and taking long naps.

Lara Hill: Assistant Manager

I have lived in Idaho since 1988 and I have five beautiful children and a wonderful husband. I have been working at The Learning Tree since 1999 and I have enjoyed every moment.

The History

The Original Founder:

Kit Harvey was the original founder of the Learning Tree which was established June 17th, 1974. She was born and raised in Boise and was the oldest of four children. She graduated from the University of Idaho and studied Psychology and Sociology. After graduation she worked for the State of Idaho (Office of Children) department. She was then inspired to open up her own center.

Kit has been active in the community by serving on state and city boards involving children and youth. She was president of the Junior League in the 1980’s. Some of the major projects she has worked on includes: the Ronald McDonald House, the Discovery Center of Idaho, and Guardian Ad Litem. The League worked on establishing literacy libraries and teaching art in the schools.

At The Learning Tree we have created an atmosphere where kids feel safe, involved, and loved. Students here know they can express their ideas, thoughts, concerns, and questions with staff and other students. We provide structure to their day and challenge the kids academically and socially.
